Travel Moroccan Desert Things to Know Before Your Morocco Trip

The Climate in the Desert
The desert is a whole experience: during the day, it’s hot, but be careful; the wind can surprise you and cool the air quickly. Once the sun sets, temperatures drop rapidly. Nights can be quite cold, even in early spring! Be sure to pack appropriate clothing.

Where to sleep?
You will be spoiled for choice: camping, guesthouses, hotels, riads… There’s something for every taste and budget. One thing that never changes? The warm welcome.

In the cities, you’ll find both large hotel chains and traditional riads, these stunning Moroccan houses with interior patios. It’s a wonderful way to experience Moroccan authenticity while enjoying good comfort.

Drinking Water Safely
Water is drinkable in most cities, but it’s still advisable to prefer bottled mineral water or use purification tablets, especially during treks.

When hiking, plan how much water you need. Generally, expect:

1.5 to 3 liters per day from November to February
3 to 5 liters per day the rest of the year
And of course, don’t miss the famous nomadic tea! Your guides will offer it regularly. Besides being delicious, it hydrates and helps you cope with the heat. A true local tradition.

What to pack?
Here’s a small checklist to ensure you don’t forget anything:

A sleeping bag suitable for the season
A small backpack for walks
Comfortable shoes (hiking boots or sneakers)
Sandals or espadrilles for relaxing
Sunglasses, sunscreen, and a swimsuit
A sweater or warm jacket for cool evenings
A toiletry kit (towels not provided)
A camera (preferably waterproof for sand)
Small Health Kit to Prepare
We hope you won’t need any medical care, but it’s better to be prepared! Here’s the essentials:

Band-aids, disinfectant, gauzes
Painkillers (like Doliprane)
Treatment for traveler’s diarrhea (Imodium or similar)
Creams for blisters, cuts, burns
Sunscreen
Personal medications if you are on treatment
Bonus (optional but useful):

Cocoa butter for lips
Eye drops
Blister plasters (like Compeed)
Antihistamines (like Zyrtec for allergies)
And if you don’t use them? Feel free to leave them at the end of your stay; they will always be useful to the locals in the areas you visit.

Hiking Mode
For those going on a trek, don’t forget to bring:

A water bottle
A multi-tool knife
A lighter for burning toilet paper (yes, it’s nature!)
A flashlight or headlamp with spare batteries
A sleeping bag
And once there, you can easily buy a sarouel (light, comfortable pants) or a chèche (traditional scarf perfect against the sun and sand).
