Morocco desert tour 5 days from Marrakech. Erg Chegaga, camel trek, desert camp, Draa Valley, Ait Ben Haddou.
Departure at 8:30 AM from Marrakech towards the Moroccan desert for a comfortable 5-day 4x4 excursion. We head towards Ouarzazate via the stunning route crossing the Atlas Mountains, passing through the Tizi n’Tichka pass, reaching an altitude of 2,260 meters. Along the way, we visit an artisanal argan oil cooperative. We then continue through the beautiful Ounila Valley to arrive at the famous Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Lunch will be served en route. The day concludes in Ouarzazate, where we spend the night in a traditional Moroccan-style hotel.
Departure from Ouarzazate to explore the Moroccan desert via a scenic route, passing through the Tizi-N-Tinifift pass at 1,710 meters, the starting point of the Draa Valley, Morocco’s longest river at 1,220 km. We stop in Tamegroute to discover the green pottery kilns and the ancient Islamic library. After approximately 4 hours on a stunning road, we arrive in M’hamid, the gateway to the Moroccan desert. Enjoy lunch with local inhabitants in M’hamid. In the afternoon, visit the old village of M’hamid (Ksar M’hamid) on foot with a short hike of about 1.5 hours. The night is spent in a comfortable bivouac, with a starry evening around a campfire.
We cross the Moroccan desert on a 4x4 track towards the majestic Erg Chegaga dunes, the largest dunes in the Moroccan desert. Along the way, we will explore the three main landscapes of the Moroccan Sahara: Erg, Reg, and Hamada. We pause for lunch at the Sacred Oasis, a rare oasis in the heart of the desert. In the afternoon, we climb the dunes to enjoy a stunning sunset. The evening features live music around a campfire. We spend the night under a starry sky in a comfortable bivouac.
Enjoy a day of relaxation without a vehicle. On this day, we will go on a full-day camel trek to explore the Sahara around the magnificent Erg Chegaga dunes. Lunch will be served under the shade of tamarisk trees, featuring a demonstration and tasting of traditional sand bread, while enjoying this enchanting setting. We will return to the bivouac in the afternoon.
Our tour continues through the Moroccan Sahara by crossing the sandy riverbed of Erg Chegaga and the dried lake of Iriqi. We will stop in the capital of Moroccan carpets to discover the different weaving techniques and various types of traditional Moroccan rugs. Lunch will be served in Taznakhte, after which we will resume our journey. We will return to Marrakech at the end of the day.
