Everything you need to know before your trip to Morocco

FAQ – Desert Trip Morocco

Do I need a visa to travel to Morocco?
No, a visa is not required for most European nationals. However, you do need a passport valid for at least three months after your return date — an ID card alone is not sufficient.

How do I get to Morocco?
Several airlines fly to Morocco from major European cities (TUI Fly, Royal Air Maroc, Ryanair...). You should easily find a flight departing from your city.

How do I get to the desert from the airport?
Sables Émouvants can organize your transfer as soon as you land. You can also rent a car locally, or take a bus (we recommend the CTM company) or a shared taxi to reach southern Morocco.

What budget should I plan for my trip?
It depends on your comfort level:

  • Very simple hotel: €25 to €50 / night
  • Comfortable hotel: €50 to €90 / night
  • Riad or luxury hotel: from €90 / night
  • Meals (lunch or dinner): between €15 and €40

Cheaper options are available, but service quality varies accordingly.

What currency is used and how can I exchange money?
The local currency is the Moroccan Dirham (€1 ≈ 10 DH). You can exchange euros or dollars at airport exchange offices (less favorable rates), at some hotels, or at banks. Remember to notify your bank before departure to unlock your VISA card for use abroad — most payments are made in cash.

Do I need to be fit to go on a desert trek?
No. Our desert treks and hikes in Morocco are suitable for all fitness levels — our team adapts the pace and itinerary to the group's abilities.

Are 4x4 excursions suitable for everyone?
Yes, our 4x4 excursions are open to everyone. Our vehicles are comfortable and air-conditioned.

How do you manage water and hydration during treks?
Water safety is a priority: quantities are checked at the start of each trek departing from M'Hamid. Plan for 1 to 3 liters per person per day from November to February, and 3 to 4 liters the rest of the year. Nomad tea, served throughout your stay, is also an excellent way to stay hydrated.

What food is provided during a desert stay?
Meals are simple, local, and generous. You're welcome to join in preparing the food if you'd like (never mandatory) — a wonderful shared moment, especially when it comes to baking traditional sand bread.

What should I pack for a desert trek?

  • A soft backpack or duffel bag (avoid hard suitcases, which can injure the camels)
  • A small daypack for your daily essentials
  • Lightweight shoes or sandals (with socks for cooler nights)
  • Light clothing for the day, warmer layers for the evening, plus rain gear
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses
  • A basic first-aid kit (plasters, disinfectant, paracetamol, anti-diarrheal medication, eye drops...)
  • A flashlight, ideally a headlamp
  • A water bottle
  • Toilet paper and a lighter (waste must be burned in the desert)
  • Small bags for your daily rubbish
  • Waterproof/airtight bags to protect your camera or phone
  • A balaclava or beanie for cold nights
  • A good sleeping bag

Does it get cold at night in the desert?
Yes, temperatures drop sharply after sunset. In December, for example, expect around 20°C during the day but only 5°C in the evening — pack warm layers even in high season.
